My mom came to the world just as her daddy left it
In the shadow of Rainier way out west
Barely not a child she was pressured to wed
Her mama thought it for the best

Some eastward miles later, that marriage was done
She’d given it a shot that she felt fair
All alone in Detroit she heard the call of home
And I never knew the color of her hair

She prayed and she obeyed
The call of the Cascades
From which she had tried to run
She kissed her children and cried
She whispered a sweet goodbye
And flew from the (her) rising sun (son)

Reinventing herself, when I would come each June
She instilled in me a love for old Rainier
But most of all we grew a love that remains true
Though far away, she’ll always be right here

Her story, it reads like a biography of hardship
With losses that none should have to bear
But she never lost that romantic, optimistic heart
And I never knew the true color of my mother’s hair
I never knew the color of her hair
